water ballet

video, sound, 7 min, 2010

In Water Ballet a red – and at times turning blue - strawberry wax tablecloth becomes a somewhat surreal circus-like stage, where fish and seafood take turns in performing their different acts. Various types of fish are brought to life through stop motion animation creating ever-changing tableaux, playing with the notion of entertainment and how symmetry and synchronized movements have the ability to seduce the viewer. Perfect imperfection is what is tested ...

The sound is a collage from pre-made sounds from ‘sound garage’, attempting to reinforce the entertainment character of this “dry” water ballet, but breaking it at the same time.

The ending has little in common with a happily-ever-after- formula. It’s of course dramatic, with perhaps a pinch of comedy, reminiscent of classic disney cartoons.
